Traveling with a GLP‑1 pen: storage, TSA and shot day

What each label says about keeping your pen cool, what airport security expects, and how to keep your weekly routine on the road.

You can travel with a GLP-1 pen, and the labels give you real room to do it. Before first use, Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro pens belong in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C), but if needed a Zepbound or Mounjaro single-dose pen can stay unrefrigerated at up to 86°F (30°C) for a total of 21 days, and a Wegovy single-dose pen at 46°F to 86°F (8°C to 30°C) for up to 28 days. An Ozempic pen, once you have started it, can be kept at 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C) for 56 days. TSA allows injectable medication and the unused needles that go with it in your carry-on when you declare them at the checkpoint.

Key takeaways

  • No GLP-1 pen should be frozen or kept above 86°F (30°C). The Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro labels all say not to use a pen that has been frozen, and to protect pens from heat and light.
  • Out-of-fridge time differs by pen: up to 21 days for Zepbound and Mounjaro single-dose pens, up to 28 days for Wegovy single-dose pens, and 56 days for an Ozempic pen after first use.
  • TSA allows medically necessary liquids over 3.4 ounces in reasonable quantities in your carry-on; you must declare them and they are screened separately.
  • Medically necessary gel ice packs are allowed through security in any state, frozen or melted, as long as you tell the TSA officer.
  • The labels let you move your weekly shot day: Wegovy and Ozempic need at least 2 days (48 hours) between doses, Zepbound and Mounjaro at least 3 days (72 hours).
  • Used pens go in an FDA-cleared sharps container, or a sturdy household substitute, never loose in the trash. TSA allows used syringes in a sharps container.

How long can a GLP-1 pen stay out of the fridge?

It depends on the pen, and the range runs from 21 to 56 days. This table shows what each US label (FDA prescribing information) says. Read the Instructions for Use in your own box too, because devices and countries differ.

Medicine and deviceBefore first useOut of the fridge, if neededTemperature range

Wegovy tabletsRoom temperatureRoom temperature68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C)

Two details matter for trips. First, the Zepbound and Mounjaro limit is a running total: if a pen spent 5 days out of the fridge on one trip, it has 16 left, not a fresh 21. Second, the Wegovy single-dose pen label says to discard it once it has been out of the fridge for 28 days, so write down the day you took it out.

If you are on the daily Wegovy pill, travel is simpler: the label says to store the tablets at room temperature, 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C).

Should I pack my GLP-1 pen in a checked bag?

No, keep it with you. The CDC recommends packing medicines in your carry-on in case checked luggage is lost or delayed, and in a carry-on you can keep the pen away from heat and cold yourself. Once a checked bag leaves your hands, you cannot control how hot or cold it gets.

That matters because the labels are strict about temperature. All four labels say not to use a pen that has been frozen. None allows storage above 86°F (30°C), and the Wegovy patient information says to throw away a pen that has been exposed to temperatures above 86°F (30°C). You cannot always tell by looking, so prevention is the whole game.

How do I keep a GLP-1 pen cool while traveling?

Keep it in its original carton, in an insulated bag, and away from both heat and direct contact with ice. A few habits help:

  • Leave the pen in its box. The labels say the carton protects the medicine from light.
  • Use an insulated case with ice packs, but put a cloth or the carton between the pen and the pack. The labels say never to freeze the pen, and the Wegovy and Ozempic labels say not to store it right next to a refrigerator's cooling element, for the same reason.
  • Never leave it in a parked car, on a sunny windowsill, or in a beach bag. Summer heat can pass 86°F (30°C) quickly.
  • Use the hotel fridge with care. Keep the pen away from the cooling element and check it is not icy before you use it.
  • Note the date it came out of the fridge. With a 21- or 28-day limit, a quick note on your phone saves guessing later.

Before each injection, the Zepbound and Mounjaro Instructions for Use ask you to check that the medicine is not frozen, not cloudy, and has no particles. If it fails that check, do not use it; contact your pharmacy or prescriber.

What are the TSA rules for flying with a GLP-1 pen and needles?

TSA allows your GLP-1 pens, needles and cooling packs in your carry-on, with a few steps at the checkpoint. These come from TSA's own guidance:

ItemCarry-onWhat TSA asks
Liquid medication, including pensYesLarger amounts than 3.4 ounces are allowed in reasonable quantities; declare them to the officer and remove them from your bag to be screened separately
Unused syringes or pen needlesYesAllowed when accompanied by injectable medication; declare them at the checkpoint
Used syringesYesAllowed in a sharps disposal container or similar hard-surface container
Gel ice packs for medicationYesMedically necessary gel packs are allowed in any state, frozen or melted, in reasonable quantities; tell the officer

TSA recommends, but does not require, that medication be labeled to make screening easier. The final decision on any item rests with the TSA officer.

If you would like help at the checkpoint, TSA Cares is a free helpline for travelers with medical conditions at (855) 787-2227. TSA suggests calling about 72 hours before your flight, and you can ask for a Passenger Support Specialist at the airport.

Do I need a prescription to travel with my GLP-1?

TSA recommends, but does not require, that medication be labeled, and its guidance does not list a prescription among its requirements. Carrying one still makes everything easier, and for international trips the CDC recommends it. The CDC's advice for traveling abroad with medicine:

  1. Keep medicines in their original, labeled containers, with your name, your prescriber's name and the dose on the label.
  2. Bring copies of all your prescriptions, including the generic names (semaglutide or tirzepatide), and leave a copy with someone at home.
  3. Ask your prescriber for a letter describing your condition and treatment, especially since you are carrying needles.
  4. Check with the embassy of your destination, and any country where you have a layover, that your medicine is allowed.
  5. Pack enough for the whole trip, plus extra in case of delays.

Brand names change across borders. Zepbound, for example, is a US brand; in Mexico and much of Latin America, tirzepatide is sold as Mounjaro. Having the generic name on paper helps a pharmacist or doctor abroad understand what you take.

How do I keep my weekly shot day when I change time zones?

Most trips shift your clock by hours, not days. If a trip makes your usual day awkward, the labels let you move your shot day, within limits:

MedicineWhat the label says about changing your shot day
WegovyYou may change the day of the week as long as your last dose was given 2 or more days before
OzempicThe day can be changed as long as the time between two doses is at least 2 days (more than 48 hours)
ZepboundThe day can be changed as long as the time between the 2 doses is at least 3 days (72 hours)
MounjaroThe day can be changed as long as the time between the 2 doses is at least 3 days (72 hours)

If you are not sure how to time a shot around a long trip, ask your prescriber before you leave. If you miss a dose while traveling, follow your prescriber and the label for your medicine rather than guessing. Our shot day guide covers the weekly routine in more detail.

Rotating sites on the road works the same as at home; our injection sites guide shows where each label lets you inject.

How do I dispose of used pens while traveling?

Put used pens in an FDA-cleared sharps container right away, the same as at home. The Wegovy, Zepbound and Mounjaro labels say that if you do not have one, you can use a household container that is:

  • made of heavy-duty plastic,
  • closed with a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid,
  • upright and stable during use,
  • leak-resistant, and
  • labeled to warn of hazardous waste inside.

The FDA says never to put loose needles or other sharps in household or public trash or recycling, and never to flush them. A small travel sharps container fits in a carry-on, and TSA allows used syringes in one. When it is almost full, follow local rules for disposal; in the US, the FDA points to Safe Needle Disposal (safeneedledisposal.org) or (800) 643-1643 to find options near you. Abroad, ask a pharmacy.

Seek care right away if you have severe stomach pain that will not go away (with or without vomiting), signs of severe dehydration, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or trouble breathing, wherever you are. If you notice a lump or swelling in your neck, contact your clinician.

How Morning helps

Morning keeps your shot log and shot-day reminders with you on your iPhone wherever you go, and remembers your last injection sites so rotating on the road stays easy. Side-effect check-ins show whether travel days change how you feel around your shot, and the food photo scan counts protein, fiber and water when you are eating somewhere new. If you have a question about food or side effects on the road, Ask Sunny is there; for anything about your dose, Sunny sends you to your prescriber.

Questions

Can I bring Ozempic or Wegovy on a plane?

Yes. TSA allows injectable medication and the needles that go with it in your carry-on. Declare them at the checkpoint, where they are screened separately.

Does Zepbound need to stay refrigerated when I travel?

Not for the whole trip. The label says a Zepbound or Mounjaro single-dose pen can be stored unrefrigerated at up to 86°F (30°C) for up to a total of 21 days. It must not be frozen.

What happens if my GLP-1 pen gets too hot or freezes?

All four labels say not to use a pen that has been frozen, and none allows storage above 86°F (30°C); the Wegovy label says to throw away a pen exposed to that heat. Contact your pharmacy or prescriber about a replacement.

Can I change my shot day because of a trip?

The labels allow it within limits: at least 2 days (48 hours) between doses for Wegovy and Ozempic, and at least 3 days (72 hours) for Zepbound and Mounjaro. Check with your prescriber before you change it.
